EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century print depicts the Lord Mayor's Coach, an opulent and grandiose vehicle that was once used to transport the Lord Mayor of London on official engagements. The coach, believed to date back to around 1750, is a testament to the grandeur and wealth of the City of London during this period. The coach is drawn by a team of six horses, each adorned with intricately designed harnesses and adorned with feathers in their headdresses. The carriage itself is a marvel of craftsmanship, with ornate gold and silver decorations covering every inch of its surface. The windows are draped in rich velvet fabric, and the roof is adorned with a magnificent canopy supported by gilded pillars. The Lord Mayor, who is depicted standing on the steps of the coach, is dressed in the traditional robes and insignia of his office. He is surrounded by his entourage, including members of the City Corporation and other dignitaries. The scene is set against the backdrop of a bustling London street, with onlookers gathered to catch a glimpse of the procession. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the opulence and grandeur of 18th century London. It is a reminder of the rich history and tradition that surrounds the office of the Lord Mayor, and the important role that this figure played in the civic life of the city.
