EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in January 1936, we find the intrepid explorers Lincoln Ellsworth and Herbert Hollick-Kenyon, standing before their aeroplane, the Polar Star, on the icy shores of Dundee Island in the Antarctic. The two American and British pioneers had embarked on an ambitious trans-Antarctic flight on November 23, 1935, with the goal of covering 2000 miles from Dundee Island to the Bay of Whales on the Ross Sea. Their mission was to conduct aerial reconnaissance and scientific research, charting uncharted territories and contributing to the growing body of knowledge about the enigmatic Antarctic continent. However, their journey did not go as planned. Due to fuel shortages, the Polar Star was forced to make an emergency landing, leaving Ellsworth and Hollick-Kenyon stranded in the harsh Antarctic wilderness for over seven weeks. With no means of communication, their disappearance sparked a massive search and rescue operation, spearheaded by the British Royal Research Ship Discovery II. The photograph captures the moment of their long-awaited rescue, as they are greeted by the Discovery II's crew. The relief and joy on their faces are palpable, a testament to their indomitable spirit and the unwavering determination that had kept them alive through the harrowing ordeal. This photograph stands as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the unforgiving landscape of the Antarctic. Ellsworth and Hollick-Kenyon's trans-Antarctic flight, though cut short, remains an important chapter in the annals of polar exploration and aviation history. Their daring adventure, fraught with challenges and triumphs, continues to inspire and captivate generations of explorers and adventurers.
