Leopold I, King of the Belgians (1831-1865): A Regal Journey Through History This evocative photograph captures Leopold I, the founding monarch of the Belgian state, in his full regal attire. Born on December 16, 1790, in Coburg, Saxony, Leopold embarked on a remarkable journey that would lead him to the throne of Belgium. The year 1831 marked a pivotal moment in Belgian history, as the Belgian Revolution broke out against the Dutch rule. Leopold, who was then the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was chosen as the first King of the newly independent Belgian state.
