This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Alexander Murdock Mackay, a Scottish author and lay agent of the English Church Missionary Society in Uganda, around Lake Victoria Nyanza. The image was taken in 1876, as Mackay embarked on his momentous journey to Africa, a land that would become his home for the next three decades. Born in Edinburgh in 1841, Mackay's passion for Africa was ignited by reading Livingstone's "Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa."
