After three long days and nights, the mighty creature has finally thrown up Jonah on the shore, unscathed and seemingly none the worse for wear. The Old Testament of the Bible, specifically the Book of Jonah, recounts this remarkable story. Jonah, a prophet of God, was instructed by the Lord to go to the city of Nineveh and warn its inhabitants to repent of their sins. However, Jonah, fearing the wrath of the Ninevites, chose instead to flee in the opposite direction. He boarded a ship to Tarshish, but God sent a great storm to disrupt the voyage. The sailors, fearing for their lives, threw Jonah overboard, believing him to be the cause of the tempest. The sea creature, traditionally identified as a whale, swallowed Jonah whole. Inside the whale's belly, Jonah prayed to the Lord for salvation. God responded by commanding the whale to spit Jonah back onto dry land.
