This evocative photograph captures the interior of a Royal Flying Corps (RFC) hut at Clairmarais, in the northern French region of Pas-de-Calais, during the final year of the First World War. The image, dated 1918, provides a glimpse into the living conditions endured by the pilots and ground crew of the RFC squadrons based in this area. The corrugated iron and metal hut is dimly lit, with a few small windows allowing in meager sunlight. A long table runs down the center of the room, cluttered with maps, papers, and other military paraphernalia. Soldiers can be seen seated around the table, engrossed in their work.
