EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph, titled "Houghton / Hope 5," captures a spiritualist seance held at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, England, in 1882. The room is filled with an atmosphere of mystery and otherworldly presence, as those gathered around the table seek to make contact with the spirit world. At the center of the table, medium Mrs. Phillips, dressed in a flowing white robe, focuses intently on the séance circle, her hands hovering above the table. To her left, Captain Jebb, a bearded man in military uniform, holds a lantern, while Mr. Martheze, a tall, mustached man, looks on with rapt attention. To the right of the medium, Mr. Ivinney, a man with a neatly trimmed beard, holds a candlestick, and Captain Steuart, dressed in a naval uniform, sits with his brother, Captain Ainger. In the background, Mrs. Herne, dressed in black, holds a shawl around her shoulders, while her nephew, Mr. Herne, stands unclad and seemingly in a trance-like state. The spirit of her deceased husband, also named Herne, is believed to be present in the room, manifesting as a double of Mr. Herne. The room is illuminated by the dim light of the candles and lanterns, casting eerie shadows on the walls and adding to the sense of otherworldliness. The fallen woman, a figure often present in spiritualist seances, is depicted at the bottom of the photograph, lying on the floor and surrounded by a halo of light. This photograph offers a glimpse into the world of spiritualism and mediumship in the late 19th century, a time when many people sought answers to the mysteries of life, death, and the afterlife through these practices. The image is a powerful reminder of the belief in an unseen world that existed alongside the physical one, and the fascination that it held for people during this period in history.
