EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the historic moment when Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão's 1709 Project, the magnetically steered barque, took flight from the Tower of the Casa da India in Lisbon, Portugal, towards the Terreiro do Paço. The year was August, early in the 18th century, and the event marked a significant milestone in the annals of scientific discovery and aviation history. Bartolomeu Lourenço de Gusmão was a Portuguese polymath, known for his groundbreaking work in various fields, including physics, mathematics, and engineering. His most famous invention, the 1709 Project, was a hot air balloon-like contraption, which he claimed could be steered using magnets. The barque was designed with a hollow, spherical shape, filled with hot air from a fire beneath. The steering mechanism consisted of two large, magnetic wheels attached to the bottom of the balloon, which were believed to influence the direction of the air currents and control the flight. Despite skepticism from the scientific community and the authorities, Gusmão was granted permission to demonstrate his invention at the Tower of the Casa da India. On the day of the event, a large crowd gathered to witness the spectacle. With the help of his assistants, Gusmão managed to fill the barque with hot air, causing it to lift off the ground and glide a short distance before touching down again. Although the flight was brief, it was enough to generate widespread excitement and intrigue. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into this remarkable episode in history, capturing the spirit of innovation and curiosity that defined the Age of Discovery. The image also serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of flight and the human desire to explore the unknown.
