EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the enigmatic Gulper Shark, Centrophorus granulosus, a deep-sea dwelling elasmobranch that has long fascinated marine biologists and natural historians. The image was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The intricate engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault for Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles between 1816 and 1830. The Gulper Shark, also known as the Pelican Shark or Hippolyte Shark, is characterized by its large, upturned mouth, which resembles that of a pelican, and its long, slender body. This deep-sea shark can grow up to 6 meters in length and is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans at depths of up to 4,000 meters. Its diet consists mainly of cephalopods and other deep-sea fish. The meticulous detail in this engraving showcases the skill and artistry of the craftsmen involved in its creation. The delicate shading and precise lines capture the textures and contours of the shark's body, while the vibrant colors bring the creature to life. This beautiful and rare illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Gulper Shark and the scientific knowledge of the early 19th century.
