EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a group of Buddhist men of various ages gather in the ancient city of Kashgar, located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China's far west. The year is estimated to be around 1932. The men, dressed in traditional garb, sit and stand in a circle, their faces expressing a range of emotions from contemplation to merriment. The eldest among them, with a long white beard and a serious expression, sits in the center, his hands folded in his lap. To his right, a younger man with a shaved head and a serious expression looks on. Behind them, other men of all ages, some with beards, others clean-shaven, join in the circle. The scene exudes a sense of community and spiritual connection. Kashgar, a city with a rich cultural heritage, has long been a melting pot of various ethnic groups, including Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Muslims. Buddhism, along with Islam and Christianity, has been one of the major religions practiced in the region. This photograph captures a moment in time, a glimpse into the past, when Buddhism continued to thrive in Kashgar, before the region underwent significant political and demographic changes in the latter half of the 20th century. The photograph was taken by Ralph Ponsonby Watts, a British traveler and photographer who documented his journeys through China and other parts of Asia in the 1930s. Watts' travels took him to remote and often inaccessible areas, allowing him to capture unique and authentic images of people and places that were not yet touched by modernity. This photograph of the Buddhist men in Kashgar is a testament to his keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of a moment in time.
