The French, under the command of King Louis XII, had invaded Italy once again, determined to claim the region for themselves. The city of Padova, a strategic and culturally rich prize, was fiercely defended by the Venetian forces. In this print, we see the contemporary siege methods being employed by the French army. The use of large screens to conceal their siege artillery is a clever tactic, allowing them to approach the city walls undetected and unopposed.
