This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of the Spurs, also known as the Battle of Courtrai or the Battle of Kortrijk, which took place on July 11, 1302, in present-day Belgium. The battle is named after the Flemish victory, during which the count of Flanders, Robert II of Artois, led his army against a much larger force of French knights. The print shows Robert d'Artois, dressed in his armor and mounted on horseback, being surrounded by a sea of Flemish infantrymen, who wielded pikes and axes.
