This evocative photograph captures some of the indomitable canine members of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's polar expedition to Antarctica, which returned to Lyttelton, New Zealand, aboard the Terra Nova in February 1913. The dogs, a mix of Siberian and Norwegian huskies, played a crucial role in the expedition's haulage and transport, enabling the team to traverse the treacherous icy terrain. Scott, a renowned British explorer, was known for his ethical stance towards the use of dogs in his expeditions. Unlike his Norwegian counterpart, Roald Amundsen, who controversially slaughtered his dogs for food during his successful race to the South Pole in 1911, Scott refused to resort to such measures.
