EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the tragic moment of the death of Colonel Frederick Burnaby at the Battle of Abu Klea Wells on January 17, 1885. Born in England in 1842, Burnaby was a renowned soldier and explorer who had gained fame for his daring exploits in various parts of the world. In 1884, he joined General Gordon's relief expedition to Khartoum, Sudan, to aid in the defense against the Sudanese Mahdist forces. The Battle of Abu Klea Wells took place during the retreat of the British and Egyptian forces from Khartoum. Outnumbered and surrounded, Burnaby led his men in a brave charge against the Mahdist forces, hoping to buy time for the rest of the army to escape. The fierce battle raged on for several hours, with both sides suffering heavy losses. During the final stages of the battle, Colonel Burnaby was mortally wounded while leading his men in a desperate attempt to hold back the advancing Mahdist forces. The engraving shows him lying on the ground, surrounded by his fallen comrades, with a determined look on his face as he clutches his sword. The scene is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the heat of battle. The Battle of Abu Klea Wells was a significant engagement in the Mahdist War, which lasted from 1881 to 1898. Despite the loss of Colonel Burnaby and many other brave soldiers, the British and Egyptian forces were able to retreat safely, thanks in large part to the heroic actions of Burnaby and his men. This engraving is a testament to the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this historic battle.
