EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Crown Prince Olav of Norway, later King Olav V, is seen in his youthful days. Born on July 2, 1903, Olav was initially a Danish prince, named Alexander, and the eldest son of Prince Carl of Denmark and Princess Maud of Wales. However, when his father was elected King of Norway in 1905, Olav and his family changed their nationality, and Olav became the first Norwegian prince to attend an ordinary state school in Oslo. Olav's parents, King Haakon VII and Queen Maud, were themselves of significant historical importance. Haakon was the first monarch elected in Norway since the Middle Ages, while Maud was the youngest daughter of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. Olav was educated privately at first but later attended secondary school in Oslo, where he gained a strong connection with the Norwegian people. In 1915, Olav's father, King Haakon, was forced to flee Norway during World War I, leaving Olav to act as regent. Olav's bravery and commitment to Norway during this time earned him great respect and admiration from the Norwegian people. Olav ascended to the throne in 1957, following his father's death. He reigned until his own death on January 17, 1991. This photograph captures a moment in time when Olav was still a young prince, full of promise and potential, as he embarked on a life dedicated to serving his adopted country, Norway. This image is a valuable historical record, showcasing the early life of a monarch who played a pivotal role in Norwegian history. It is a poignant reminder of the complexities of European royal families and the political changes that shaped the 20th century.
