The year was 1908-1909, and the race to reach the North Pole was heating up. Peary, an American explorer, claimed to have reached the pole on April 6, 1909, while Cook, a Norwegian explorer, arrived just days later, on April 21. However, the validity of Peary's claim was not universally accepted at the time, and Cook's team maintained that they had actually reached the pole first. This photograph, taken discreetly during the expedition, does not indicate which of the two explorers is the true discoverer of the North Pole.
