EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a beautifully preserved Jacksons Chameleon (Chamaeleo jacksonii), also known as Jacksons chameleon, is showcased in a spirit jar at the Natural History Museum in London. The Darwin Centre, where this specimen is housed, is an extension of the museum dedicated to research and public engagement with natural history. Jacksons Chameleons are native to Madagascar and are named after the British naturalist Sir Harry Johnston, who first described the species in 1892. They belong to the Squamata order, which includes all lizards and snakes, and the Chamaeleonidae family, commonly known as chameleons. This striking reptile is a master of camouflage, with the ability to change its coloration to blend in with its surroundings. In this still setting, its vibrant, iridescent scales are on full display, showcasing the intricate patterns that make chameleons so unique. The spirit jar preservation method is a common practice in natural history collections to maintain specimens for scientific study. The specimen is immersed in a preservative, typically a mixture of alcohol and formaldehyde, which halts the decaying process, allowing the organism to be studied indefinitely. The Jacksons Chameleon's taxonomic classification includes the following: - Kingdom: Animalia - Phylum: Sauropsida (reptiles and birds) - Class: Reptilia - Order: Squamata (lizards and snakes) - Infraorder: Lepidosauria - Superorder: Iguania - Family: Chamaeleonidae - Genus: Chamaeleo - Subfamily: Chamaeleoninae - Species: Chamaeleo jacksonii This photograph serves as a testament to the natural history collections at the Natural History Museum and the importance of preserving specimens for scientific research and education.
