Carl V, also known as Charles I, is depicted in this stunning portrait at the age of 32, during his reign as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain from 1519 to 1556. Born on February 24, 1500, in Ghent, Flanders, Carl V was the last Habsburg king of the Spanish, German, and Italian lands. In this portrait, Carl V wears the regal attire of the time, including a ruff collar, a voluminous shirt, and a fur-trimmed cloak. He is also adorned with a prominent imperial hat, symbolizing his status as the Holy Roman Emperor. The intricately designed hat is adorned with gold and precious stones, reflecting the wealth and power of the Holy Roman Empire. Carl V's chin is prominent in the portrait, which was a desirable feature during the Renaissance era. He is shown with a serious expression, conveying the weight of his responsibilities as a ruler. The portrait also reveals his well-groomed hands, adorned with elegant white gloves.
