EDITORS COMMENTS
Fighting the Flames on the Battlefield: British Troops Repelling a German Liquid Fire Attack, 1917. The horrors of the First World War were not limited to the bullets and bombs that rained down on the Western Front. In the heat of battle, a new and terrifying weapon was unleashed: the flame thrower, or flammenwerfer. In this harrowing image, German soldiers wielding these infernal devices launch sprays of liquid fire towards a British trench. The intense heat and flames engulfed the battlefield, leaving many British soldiers overwhelmed and suffering from burns to their faces and bodies. The scene is set on the muddy and cratered terrain of the Western Front, with barbed wire entanglements stretching out into the distance. The German attack was relentless, but the British were not without their defenses. Amidst the chaos, a determined machine gunner manages to bring his Lewis gun to bear, firing back at the advancing Germans. The sound of gunfire echoes across the battlefield as the British troops fight back against the onslaught. The use of flame throwers in warfare marked a new level of barbarity in the First World War. The liquid fire attacks were not only devastating to the soldiers on the receiving end, but also to the environment, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. This image serves as a stark reminder of the brutal and inhumane tactics employed during this period of history. The date on this photograph is 1917, a pivotal year in the war, as both sides continued to search for an advantage on the battlefield. This image underscores the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, as the British troops successfully defend their trench against the German liquid fire attack.
