The workhouse system, established in England and Wales from the Elizabethan period until the mid-20th century, was designed to provide relief and shelter for the destitute, the elderly, the sick, and the unemployed. Those who entered the workhouse were required to surrender their personal possessions and adhere to a strict regimen of work and discipline in exchange for food and shelter.
