The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 had introduced the concept of workhouses as a means to provide relief for the destitute, while also encouraging able-bodied paupers to work and contribute to the community. The Bolton Union Workhouse was one of many such institutions established across the country to implement this new approach. The main building, with its Gothic Revival architectural style, housed various facilities including dormitories, workshops, and a school.
