EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures a pivotal moment during the Second Boer War (1899-1902) as the Boers, led by Achille Beltrame, defended their positions along the Tugela River against the British offensive of 1900. The Boers, a group of Dutch-speaking farmers and settlers, fiercely resisted the British expansion into their lands in South Africa. In this image, we see a determined Beltrame and his men huddled together in the trenches, their faces etched with focus and resolve. The Tugela River, a natural barrier, is depicted in the background, its waters reflecting the turmoil of the conflict. The British forces, not visible in this frame, were relentless in their pursuit to gain control of the region, marking the beginning of a long and brutal war. The scene is a poignant reminder of the colonialist struggles and the human cost of imperialism during this period in African history. Beltrame, a French photographer, captured many such moments during the war, documenting the Anglo-Boer Wars and the English settlements in South Africa.
