EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of resilience and hope among the Belgian patients of the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital during World War I. Established on October 15, 1914, and run by the Kent/178, Birchington Detachment, the hospital provided essential care to wounded soldiers and civilians displaced by the conflict. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum located at Quex Park. In this image, four Belgian patients are seen standing and sitting on the fence in front of Quex Park, with Oscar Van Audenhove on the left. The tranquil scene by the sea offers a brief reprieve from the harsh realities of the war. The hospital, which closed on January 31, 1919, played a vital role in providing care and support to those in need during the darkest days of the First World War. The courage and dedication of the staff and volunteers at the Quex Park VAD Hospital, led by the visionary leadership of Hannah Powell-Cotton, left a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals.
