This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544-1590), a renowned French poet and historian of the late Renaissance period. The image, created around 1590, depicts Du Bartas in the prime of his life, with a stern yet thoughtful expression that belies the depth of his literary accomplishments. Du Bartas is best known for his epic poem "La Semaine Sainte" (The Holy Week), which chronicles the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This groundbreaking work, published in 1578, was one of the first major French poems to explore the themes of the Passion in detail and helped establish Du Bartas as a leading figure in French literature.
