This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas (1544-1590), a renowned French poet and historian of the late Renaissance period. Du Bartas is best known for his epic poem "La Semaine Sainte" (The Holy Week), which chronicles the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
