EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the second prototype of the Grumman XF9F-2 Panther, a piston-engine fighter aircraft developed for the United States Navy (USN) during the 1950s. The XF9F-2, with the designation TF1N in USN service, was an evolution of the successful F6F Hellcat, which had proven itself as a formidable fighter during World War II. The XF9F-2 Panther was designed to meet the USN's requirements for a fleet defense fighter and a carrier-borne dive-bomber. It was powered by a Wright J65 turbojet engine, which was a significant improvement over the piston engines used in the Hellcat. The Panther's sleek design featured a single engine, mid-wing configuration, and a retractable tricycle landing gear. This photograph captures the XF9F-2 Panther in its early stages of development, with the distinctive Grumman "G96" markings on the fuselage. The aircraft is seen taxing on a runway, with its wingtip fuel tanks extended and its canopy open, giving a glimpse into the cockpit. The Panther's tailhook is also visible, indicating its carrier-borne capabilities. The XF9F-2 Panther was the first US Navy fighter to exceed 500 mph in level flight, and it went on to serve in the Korean War. Despite its impressive performance, it was ultimately replaced by jet-powered fighters, marking the end of an era for piston-engine fighter aircraft in the US Navy.
