September 1929: Kemal Ataturk, the visionary leader of the Turkish Republic, stands before a gathering of scholars and intellectuals in Istanbul, Turkey, as he introduces the groundbreaking reforms to Westernize the Turkish language. Ataturk, known as the "Father of the Turks," sought to modernize and secularize Turkey, and language reform was a crucial aspect of this mission. In this historic moment, Ataturk announces the adoption of the Latin-based alphabet, replacing the traditional Arabic script.
