EDITORS COMMENTS
April 1914: Yarmouth Pier in Flames After a Suffragette Arson Raid This historic photograph captures the aftermath of a daring and provocative act of civil disobedience by the British Suffragette movement. The image, taken from Yarmouth Pier, shows the pier engulfed in flames following an arson attack by militant suffragettes on the night of April 23, 1914. The Suffragette movement, which advocated for women's right to vote, had been engaging in increasingly bold and disruptive tactics to draw attention to their cause. Arson raids on buildings and property were among the most notorious of these actions. The Yarmouth Pier arson raid was one of the most significant incidents in the campaign, as it targeted a popular tourist attraction and symbol of the town's pride. The pier, which stretched out into the North Sea, was a popular destination for visitors to Yarmouth, a seaside resort town in Norfolk, England. The pier's pavilion, which housed a dance hall, cafe, and other amenities, was a particular draw. But on this fateful night, a group of suffragettes, armed with petrol bombs, set the pier ablaze, causing extensive damage and drawing widespread attention to their cause. The arson raid was a bold and risky move, as the suffragettes knew that their actions would likely result in arrests and harsh punishment. But they were willing to make the sacrifice in the name of women's rights and suffrage. The raid was a turning point in the suffrage movement, and helped to galvanize public support for their cause. This photograph, taken in the aftermath of the raid, is a powerful reminder of the determination and courage of the suffragettes, and the lengths they were willing to go to secure the right to vote for women. It is also a poignant reminder of the importance of civil disobedience and the role it can play in bringing about social change.
