Andre Beaumont of the French Navy, winner of the Great Air Race, also known as the Round Britain Air Race, covering 1000 miles in five days (22-26 July). Twenty pilots took part. There was a cash prize of 10, 000 from the Daily Mail, who sponsored the race, which began and ended at Brooklands in Surrey. Beaumont (real name Lieutenant de Vaisseau Jean Conneau) completed the course in 22 hours 28 minutes in his Bleriot monoplane. The film, Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (1965), was based around this event."
