EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lovers Oshichi" transports us back to the Edo period in Japan, between 1615 and 1868. Created around 1800 by the renowned artist Kitagawa Utamaro, this polychrome woodblock print showcases his exceptional talent in capturing emotions and telling a story through ink, color, and paper. The image depicts an ill-fated pair of lovers named Oshichi and Kichisaburo. Oshichi, the daughter of a greengrocer, fell deeply in love with Kichisaburo during their time together at an evacuated temple following the great fire of 1683 in Edo. The young boy served her faithfully as they sought solace amidst chaos. Utamaro's portrayal of these star-crossed lovers is both poignant and vividly detailed. The composition evokes a sense of longing and melancholy as we witness their forbidden love unfold against the backdrop of historical events. "Lovers Oshichi" was inspired by a popular kabuki drama that captivated audiences during its time. This lurid tale became well-known for its tragic narrative and emotional intensity. As we admire this remarkable piece from Artokoloro's Liszt Collection, we are reminded not only of Utamaro's artistic brilliance but also of the enduring power that art holds to transport us across centuries into different cultures and narratives.
