Gloucester Docks c. 1880 CC53_00092
GLOUCESTER DOCKS, Gloucestershire. The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal was built to specifications that allowed ocean going vessels to reach Gloucester, despite its distance from the sea. Begun in the 1790s, the canal eventually opened in 1827. This allowed Gloucester to compete with coastal docks in the 19th century, as this picture shows, and it had a profound effect on the commercial aspects of the town. Photographed by Sydney Pitcher, c. 1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, captured by Sydney Pitcher around 1880, offers a glimpse into the bustling maritime scene at Gloucester Docks in Gloucestershire. The image showcases the impressive engineering feat of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, which allowed ocean-going vessels to navigate as far inland as Gloucester, despite its distance from the sea. The docks teem with activity, with various boats and ships moored along the quayside. The tall masts of the ships tower over the buildings and cranes, emphasizing the importance of maritime trade to the town. The hustle and bustle of loading and unloading cargo can be imagined, as men in period attire work diligently to transfer goods between the boats and the quayside. The construction of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal had a profound impact on Gloucester, enabling it to compete with coastal docks during the 19th century. The ability to accommodate larger vessels brought an influx of commerce and economic growth to the town. This photograph provides a fascinating window into the past, offering a glimpse into the vital role that maritime trade played in the development of Gloucester and its connection to the wider world.
