Despite its remote location, Steep Holm has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries. The island's strategic military importance was recognized as early as the 19th century, and the cliffs that surround it are dotted with several gun emplacements, a testament to its defensive history. The island's fortifications were built to protect the Bristol Channel and the approaches to the port of Bristol from potential invaders.
