EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time during the construction of the iconic Empress State Building in Earls Court, London. Taken from the vantage point of the roof of the Earls Court Exhibition Centre car park, it offers a general view of this monumental project. The image showcases the impressive reinforced concrete frame being erected by Laings, who were subcontractors for Walter Lawrence and Son Ltd. The name "Lawrence" proudly displayed on a sign adorning the building serves as a testament to their involvement in this architectural marvel. Commencing in November 1959 and concluding in July 1961, this ambitious undertaking required meticulous planning and skilled craftsmanship. The photograph transports us back to an era when manual labor played an integral role in shaping our cities' skylines. The grainy texture adds character to this snapshot from history, evoking nostalgia for a bygone era. It reminds us of how far we have come technologically while also serving as a reminder that progress is built upon foundations laid by those who came before us. As we gaze at this remarkable image, we are reminded not only of the physical structures that shape our world but also of human ingenuity and determination. This print is not just about concrete and steel; it encapsulates ambition, innovation, and collective effort towards creating something enduringly magnificent.
