Pneumatic clamp JLP01_08_076807

NORFOLK. A team of men working on the lining up operation of the Fens gas pipeline, showing the internal pneumatic clamp for locking steel pipes together.
Work on laying the Fens gas pipeline started in June 1967 and was a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) for the Gas Council. Over 600 men worked on the project to lay 36 inch diameter steel pipes starting at West Winch in Norfolk and running to where it linked up with the next contract at Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. The pipeline crossed four rivers and numerous dykes and ditches. This photograph was published in September 1967 in the Laing monthly newsletter Team Spirit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Fens gas pipeline during the 1960s. The image showcases a team of dedicated men diligently working on the lining up operation, focusing specifically on the internal pneumatic clamp used to lock steel pipes together. The Fens gas pipeline project, which commenced in June 1967, was a collaborative effort between Laing Civil Engineering and French companies Entrepose and Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM), commissioned by the Gas Council. With over 600 skilled workers involved, this ambitious venture aimed to lay 36-inch diameter steel pipes stretching from West Winch in Norfolk to Woodcroft Castle in Cambridgeshire. As depicted in this photograph published in September 1967 within Laing's monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" these determined individuals faced numerous challenges along their path. Crossing four rivers as well as countless dykes and ditches required meticulous planning and execution. The significance of this image lies not only in its portrayal of engineering prowess but also its representation of teamwork and dedication. Each member played an integral role, contributing their expertise towards ensuring a successful completion of this vital infrastructure project. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance that shaped our nation's gas supply network during that era.
