EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the 15th century, showcasing the traditional practice of feeding pigs on acorns. Created by Jean Colombe in 1939, this image is part of "November - feeding pigs on acorns" a page from the renowned book of hours called "Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry". Commissioned for Jean, Duc de Berry and produced by the talented Limbourg brothers between c1412 and 1489, this manuscript illumination is considered one of Europe's finest examples. In this particular illustration, we witness a swineherd accompanied by his faithful mastiff grazing his pigs amidst an oak tree forest. Using a stick to knock down ripe acorns, he ensures that these valuable fruits fall within reach of his hungry animals. The purpose behind fattening these pigs lies in their eventual slaughter and salting to provide meat throughout the year. The picturesque countryside setting transports us back in time as we observe this age-old agricultural tradition. The vibrant colors bring life to every detail: from the lush greenery surrounding them to the rustic attire worn by both man and dog. This photograph not only showcases historical practices but also highlights the exceptional skill and artistry involved in creating illuminated manuscripts like "Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry". Preserved at Musee Conde in Chantilly, France, it serves as a testament to our rich cultural heritage.
