The image depicts the exterior of Arlington House, located in Arlington County, Virginia, United States, which was once the home of Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee. In the background, the tomb of Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the French-born architect, engineer, and city planner, who designed the spatial plan for Washington, D.C, is visible. L'Enfant's tomb is situated in Arlington National Cemetery. The historic mansion, also known as the Custis-Lee Mansion, was named after its original owners, the Custis family. Later, it became the residence of Robert E. Lee from 1857 until the outbreak of the American Civil War.
