EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "L'Achilleion, villa de Guillaume II, à l'occasion, base de ravitaillement de ses Sous-Marins; Les scelles sur la porte des appartements privés du beau-frère du roi de Grèce" was captured by renowned Swiss photographer Robert Vaucher in 1916. The image is part of the "Collection de la Guerre IV" published in the French magazine "L'Illustration" during the January, February, March, April, May, and June of that year. The photograph depicts the Achilleion Palace, a grand country house located in Corfu, Greece, which was commandeered by the German military during the First World War. The image focuses on the iron seals affixed to the doors of the private apartments of the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was the beau-frère (brother-in-law) of the King of Greece. One of the seals bears the insignia of the regisseur (manager) of Guillaume II, while the other is a French seal. The Achilleion Palace, named after the mythological hero Achilles, was built in 1891 and was a popular retreat for European royalty, including the German Emperor Wilhelm II, who frequently visited the villa before the outbreak of the war. During the conflict, the palace was requisitioned as a military hospital and supply base for the German Navy's submarines (Sous-Marins). The photograph captures a moment in time during the wartime occupation of the once grand and luxurious palace, now transformed into a functional military facility. The image is a poignant reminder of the impact of war on the world's cultural heritage and the transformation of once-private spaces into public utilities. The photograph, with its rich historical context, offers a glimpse into the past and the events that shaped the world during the First World War.
