Good-Bye !, 1875. Artist: Joseph Swain
Good-Bye !, 1875. Mr Gladstone on the right shakes hands with Prime Minister Disraeli. In the previous year, Mr Gladstones Liberal government had lost the General Election to Disraelis Conservative Party. Now, Mr Gladstone announced his withdrawal from the leadership of the Liberal Party. At the age of 65, he said that although he would continue to adhere at all times to the principles that had governed his 45 years in public life, he now felt the time was right to retire from office. He added that he was to undertake a special matter that would require his attention. Punch took this to mean that he would be writing his memoirs. Disraeli had had his first short story published when he was just 16 and he went on to write many novels and plays during the course of his life. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 30, 1875

Good-Bye! - A Historical Moment Captured in Print
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print titled "Good-Bye!, 1875" immortalizes a significant moment in British political history. The renowned artist Joseph Swain skillfully depicts the farewell encounter between two influential figures of the time, Mr Gladstone and Prime Minister Disraeli. The context behind this powerful image is equally compelling. Following his Liberal government's defeat in the previous year's General Election to Disraeli's Conservative Party, Mr Gladstone announced his withdrawal from leadership. At the age of 65, he expressed his desire to retire from office while remaining committed to the principles that guided him throughout his remarkable 45-year career in public life. Punch magazine interpreted Mr Gladstone's retirement as an opportunity for him to pen down his memoirs, given his impending engagement with a special matter. On the other hand, Disraeli had already established himself as a talented writer at a young age and continued to produce numerous novels and plays during his lifetime. This black-and-white engraving captures not only their distinct appearances but also symbolizes an era characterized by Victorian values and political satire. With their beards and top hats adorning their heads, these iconic statesmen are forever frozen in time through this monochrome masterpiece. As we gaze upon this heritage image partnership between Benjamin Disraeli, John Tenniel, Joseph Swain (creator), William Ewart Gladstone, we are reminded of the enduring impact these individuals had on British politics during the 19th century.
