Facade of the new British Museum, 1845. Creator: Ebenezer Landells

Facade of the new British Museum, 1845. The newly extended building in Bloomsbury, London. The design of the New British Museum...has certainly not been spared by the architectural critic of the " Companion to the Almanac for 1846", " who writes thus:- " The British Museum is progressing slowly, but quietly. Although two or three years more may elapse before the whole facade is complete, unless it be proceeded with more expeditiously than hitherto, we can now very plainly perceive, from what is done, the entire design and its character...the architecture is bare and cold, and has an unfinished air. At the best, the merit of the design is quite of a negative kind, as it consists entirely of colonnading, and nothing more.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the facade of the new British Museum in 1845, captured by the talented artist Ebenezer Landells. Located in Bloomsbury, London, this newly extended building stands as a testament to neoclassical architecture of the 19th century. However, not all critics were impressed with its design. As stated in the "Companion to the Almanac for 1846", an architectural critic expressed their opinion on the museum's progress and design. They described it as progressing slowly but quietly, with a bare and cold architecture that exudes an unfinished air. The critic further criticized its negative merit, claiming that it consisted solely of colonnading without any additional elements. Despite these criticisms, Landells' engraving allows us to appreciate the grandeur and scale of this iconic tourist attraction. Its neo-classical style is evident through its symmetrical composition and imposing columns that line Great Russell Street. As we gaze upon this historical photograph from Illustrated London News in 1845, we are transported back to Victorian England when art and culture flourished amidst architectural debates. This image serves as a reminder of how our perception of beauty can evolve over time while preserving glimpses into our rich heritage.
