El Bedieh, c1906-1913, (1915). Creator: Mark Sykes
El Bedieh, c1906-1913, (1915). Bedouin at the salt wells near Tell- Afar, (Iraq or Syria). The next day we pushed on to El Bedieh, where the Bedawin have sunk wells in a dry wadi, and have found salt water, just drinkable. While we were there seven Bedawin with lances galloped up amid a storm of dust...they explained to us, all breathless, that they had been racing to choose water-holes for their tribe, who were coming the next day to camp. Each man represented a party of tents, and came to mark a well for his own people. From " The Caliphs Last Heritage, a short history of the Turkish Empire" by Lt.-Col. Sir Mark Sykes. [Macmillan & Co, London, 1915]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "El Bedieh, c1906-1913" by Mark Sykes, takes us back to a time of exploration and discovery in the Middle East. The image transports us to the salt wells near Tell-Afar, either in Iraq or Syria. In this arid landscape, we witness a group of Bedouin nomads going about their daily lives. The scene is filled with energy as seven Bedouin men on horseback gallop towards us amidst a cloud of dust. Their lances held high in hand symbolize both their warrior spirit and their role as protectors of their tribe. These brave riders have raced here to secure water-holes for their people who are due to arrive the following day. Mark Sykes captures not only the physicality of these men but also provides insight into their way of life. The presence of buckets suggests that they rely on these saltwater wells for sustenance in an otherwise barren environment. Sykes' photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era when empires still vied for control over vast territories like the Ottoman Empire. Through his lens, he immortalizes this moment in history while simultaneously shedding light on the resilience and resourcefulness of the Bedouin people. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are reminded that even amidst harsh conditions, human ingenuity finds ways to thrive. It serves as a testament to our ability to adapt and survive against all odds - an enduring legacy captured forever by Mark Sykes' lens.
