Bank of stratocumulus cloud, locally called camanchaca, on Andes slopes
The regions aridity is among the worlds most severe. The high Andes prevent humid air reaching the Pacific coast, and the cool Humboldt ocean current maintains stable air pressure thus limiting the formation of clouds. Stratocumulus forms and a cushion of fog moves in from the ocean. But the cloud and fog lack the humidity to produce rain, hence the harvesting of the moisture in fog collectors
