Dead Blue Roller, 1583. Creator: Hans Hoffmann (German, 1545 / 50-1591 / 92)
Dead Blue Roller, 1583. Half a century after his death, Albrecht Durers work continued to inspire artists and collectors. Well known for his copies of Durers nature studies, Hoffmann faithfully copied Durers celebrated drawing of a dead blue roller of 1512 in this exquisite watercolour. A network of very fine brushstrokes imitates the individual plumes of the birds underside while simultaneously suggesting an overall soft, downy texture. Hoffmans prominent monogram and date indicate he never intended this to pass as an original by the older master: he meant it as an homage to the greatest German artist of the 1500s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite work of Hans Hoffmann, a German artist from the 16th century. Titled "Dead Blue Roller, 1583" this piece pays homage to the renowned Albrecht Durer and his nature studies. Hoffmann's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke of this watercolor masterpiece. He faithfully reproduces Durer's celebrated drawing of a dead blue roller from 1512, capturing its delicate beauty with precision. The network of fine brushstrokes meticulously imitates each individual plume on the bird's underside while also creating an overall soft and downy texture. In a display of respect for his predecessor, Hoffmann prominently includes his monogram and date on the artwork, indicating that he never intended it to be mistaken as an original by Durer himself. Instead, this painting serves as an homage to one of Germany's greatest artists from the 1500s. The use of watercolor and gouache with touches of gold adds depth and richness to the composition, further enhancing its visual appeal. This particular print is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art. As we admire this stunning piece, we are reminded not only of Hoffmann's talent but also how art continues to inspire generations long after its creation.
