Ceremony of the Commencement of the Great Puglia Railway, by the Neapolitan Minister of Public Works Creator: Unknown
Ceremony of the Commencement of the Great Puglia Railway, by the Neapolitan Minister of Public Works, 1856. From west to east it is intended thus to traverse the whole width of the peninsula from Naples to Bari, and then coastwise down to Brindisi...The sunny plains of Apulia have long been celebrated for their fertility, and will now become doubly productive that this long channel of communication is opened between them and the ports of the Mediterranean and the Adriatic.... upon a table covered with velvet, was placed the foundation-stone...On the same table were laid, too, the metal case which was to contain the stone and the box with the various coins - gold, silver, and copper - of the reigning monarch. The tribune opposite the altar was occupied in the centre by his Excellency the Minister of Public Works, Signor Commendatore Minena, as the representative of the King'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of Italian infrastructure development: the Ceremony of the Commencement of the Great Puglia Railway in 1856. The scene unfolds on a sunny day in Naples, with the Neapolitan Minister of Public Works, Signor Commendatore Minena, presiding over the event as the representative of the King. The foundation stone for the railway, intended to traverse the entire width of the Apulia peninsula from Naples to Bari and then down to Brindisi, is prominently displayed on a velvet-covered table. The table also holds a metal case to contain the stone and a box with coins of the reigning monarch. The sunny plains of Apulia, celebrated for their fertility, were about to become even more productive with this new communication channel linking them to the Mediterranean and Adriatic ports. This photograph is a testament to the vision and determination of the Italian authorities to connect their regions and enhance their economic potential through infrastructure development.
