EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable casket from the 15th century, captured by the talented artist Frederick Albert Slocombe. The wooden box with its intricately carved lid was crafted in Germany at the beginning of this medieval era. Adorned with exquisite details, it features a man-headed eagle on the front, accompanied by the German inscription "Mit willen dien ich" meaning "I serve with good will". A whimsical owl dancing alongside adds an enchanting touch to this masterpiece, while the words "an true tans" hint at a regular dance. The iron mounts seen on this artifact are replacements dating back to around 1850. This stunning etching is part of Slocombe's contribution to "The South Kensington Museum" a renowned book showcasing engraved illustrations and descriptions of art pieces housed in London's Victoria & Albert Museum (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). Slocombe skillfully captures both the beauty and historical significance of this medieval treasure through his detailed engraving technique.
