Camp at Three Degree Depot, c1911, (1913). Artist: Henry Bowers

Camp at Three Degree Depo t, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in history, depicting the Camp at Three Degree Depot during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Led by Scott, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed to conduct scientific research and reach the South Pole for the first time. The team consisted of various experts in their fields, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. In this particular image taken by artist Henry Bowers in 1911 (published in 1913), we see a glimpse of life at the campsite amidst vast icy landscapes. It serves as a testament to the harsh conditions faced by these brave explorers as they pushed forward towards their ultimate goal. Tragically, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912 - after enduring blizzards and dwindling supplies - Scott and his remaining team members discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already reached the South Pole a month earlier. Overwhelmed by disappointment and weakened by their arduous journey back from poleward regions; Scott along with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans succumbed to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside heart-wrenching diaries documenting their struggle for survival against nature's relentless forces. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 which immortalizes not only an extraordinary adventure but also pays tribute to those who sacrificed everything for exploration and scientific advancement
