Created during the period when blockbooks were prevalent, this particular work stands out as an early blockbook bible that served as a valuable guide for impoverished clerics and friars in northern Europe. The image captures two folios from this extraordinary bible. On the left page, we witness a New Testament scene where Christ's baptism takes center stage. Flanking this pivotal moment are depictions of Pharaoh's army being engulfed by the Red Sea and spies returning with grapes from Canaan. The right page presents another powerful tableau, featuring the temptation of Christ at its core. Surrounding this event are scenes depicting Esau selling his birthright to Jacob and Adam and Eve succumbing to temptation. What makes these pages even more visually striking are their arched windows above and below, housing prophets alongside explanatory texts. This intricate design adds depth and context to each scene, enhancing our understanding of biblical narratives. Printed using woodblock carving techniques on a single block, these pages represent one of Europe's earliest forms of printed text before movable type was invented.
