Battle of Tientsin, Boxer Rebellion, China, 1900 (1901). The south gate immediately after the allies entered the city. The Boxer Uprising or Boxer Rebellion was a Chinese rebellion from November 1899 to September 7, 1901 against foreign influence in areas such as trade, politics, religion and technology that occurred in China during the final years of the Qing Dynasty. The assassination of the German ambassador and the siege of foreign diplomatic legations in Peking prompted Britain, France, Germany, the US, Russia, Japan, Italy and Austria-Hungary to form the Eight Nation Alliance and intervene militarily. The Chinese port city of Tientsin (Tianjin) was occupied by the rebels on 30 May 1900 and foreign concessions were besieged. European troops captured the city from the rebels on 13 July. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of the Battle of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1900. Taken by renowned photographers Underwood & Underwood, this image showcases the south gate of Tientsin immediately after it was occupied by allied forces. The Boxer Rebellion was a significant uprising against foreign influence in various aspects of Chinese society, including trade, politics, religion, and technology. The rebellion escalated following the assassination of the German ambassador and the siege of foreign diplomatic legations in Peking (now Beijing). In response to these events, Britain, France, Germany, the US, Russia, Japan Italy and Austria-Hungary formed an alliance known as "The Eight Nation Alliance" to intervene militarily. Tientsin became a critical battleground when rebel forces captured it on May 30th. Foreign concessions were besieged until European troops successfully recaptured the city on July 13th. This powerful photograph provides a glimpse into that pivotal moment as soldiers stand amidst destroyed city walls while surveying their hard-fought victory. Through its monochrome composition and stereoscopic technique employed by Underwood & Underwood's skilled hands; this image brings history to life with its stark portrayal of war-torn surroundings and military personnel. It serves as a reminder not only of human conflict but also highlights themes such as xenophobia and rebellion within a rapidly changing world at the turn of the century.
