The Battle of Borodino, 7 September 1812

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and haunting print that captures the intensity and brutality of one of the bloodiest battles in history. Fought during the Napoleonic Wars, this single day battle marked a turning point in Napoleon's campaign to conquer Russia. In this image, we see French surgeon Dominique Jean Larrey at work in the foreground, surrounded by chaos and destruction. Reportedly performing an astonishing 200 amputations in just 24 hours, Larrey represents the immense human suffering endured on both sides. The landscape is strewn with cannons and armaments, remnants of a fierce struggle for control. The black-and-white composition adds to the somber atmosphere, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Despite Napoleon claiming a tactical victory, it was ultimately a Pyrrhic one as Russian forces were able to withdraw with enough strength to later force his retreat from Russia entirely. This battle serves as a reminder that even triumphs can come at great cost. This print is based on an original painting by French aide-de-camp Louis Francois Lejeune and featured in Raymond Guyot's book "Napoleon". It stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by soldiers on both sides during this monumental clash between two formidable powers.
