Albatrosses Foraging in the Wake of the Terra Nova, c1910–1913, (1913)

Albatrosses Foraging in the Wake of the Terra Nova, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of serene beauty amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Taken during the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, it showcases a group of majestic albatrosses gracefully soaring in the wake of the Terra Nova ship. The year is estimated to be between 1910 and 1913. Scott's British Antarctic Expedition was not only an ambitious quest to reach the South Pole but also a scientific endeavor with a diverse team of experts. Geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists all joined forces to explore this unforgiving region. Unfortunately for Scott and his team, their dreams were shattered when they arrived at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912. They discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by just over a month. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, they pressed forward until tragedy struck in late March. The bodies and diaries of Scott and his companions were found eight months later - a poignant reminder of their courage and sacrifice in pursuit of discovery. This particular image is from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I - an account published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913. It serves as both a testament to human resilience in extreme conditions and as homage to those who dedicated their lives to unraveling Antarctica's mysteries.
