EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of the Iona Cross, a symbol that has graced the tiny island of Iona for an astonishing ten centuries. Standing tall against the backdrop of Scotland's rugged landscape, this Celtic cross holds immense spiritual significance for both locals and visitors alike. The photograph sheds light on the remarkable work carried out by The Iona Community, a group of Scottish ministers dedicated to providing religious guidance to factory workers and impoverished residents in Glasgow. While their headquarters are based in the city, these devoted individuals make an annual pilgrimage to Iona for three months, where they train new recruits and organize Christian camps. Not only does this community tend to people's spiritual needs, but they have also taken on the task of restoring Iona's abandoned Abbey after it fell into disrepair during the Reformation. Their commitment to preserving history is evident in every stone meticulously placed by skilled craftsmen. Maurice Ambler skillfully captures this momentous scene with his camera lens. The stark contrast between light and shadow emphasizes not only the physical presence of the cross but also its profound symbolism. With no human figures present in this image, all attention is drawn towards this ancient relic standing resolute on a small Scottish island. This archival print serves as a powerful reminder of faith's enduring nature while showcasing Scotland's rich cultural heritage through one iconic symbol - The Iona Cross.
